For this week’s limited release post we will take a look at Dogfish Head’s Raison D’Extra. I have long been a fan of what Sam and the boys are doing at Dogfish Head. I would have to say that this brewery is one of my top five favorite breweries. So it had to make an appearance in this series, and it just so happens my store got in the newest release of Raison D’Extra. A beer of theirs that I haven’t had quite yet. Its a brown ale brewed with a “boatload” of raisins. Just to keep track on the scoreboard that’s two special release Sundays and two brown ales.
-Appearance: Light brown with reddish tint making it maroon looking. Small amount of carbonation but keeps a light head for a duration of the pint.
-Nose: Sweet, brown sugar smelling malt. The raisins give it an almost wine smelling nose.
-Palate: This baby is high in alcohol. I got it with the first sip and it definitely gives you a great warming sensation after finishing most of the pint. You definitely get the raisins on the palate. They seem to be more pronounced on the palate than even the nose as they seem to get lost in the nose a bit. They sure are there in the palate.
-Rating: 3/5: For two weeks in row now I have been pleasantly surprised by a brown ale. Both have been special releases, so maybe if all breweries gave the great attention that both of these brown ales received then I would be more apt to pick them up on occasion.
